RTI Act applicable to NGOs and projects that receive government finance

Citizens can exercise their right to information with NGOs and projects that receive government finance.

Media minister Gayantha Karunathilaka stated that this applies to any non-governmental organization that is supported financially by any government overseas – not just the Sri Lankan government – or that uses funds from our government. Any information can therefore be requested from them according to the Act.

On the basis that government funds are understood as public funds, any NGO that uses funds from a foreign government towards activities in Sri Lanka or uses funds from our government can be held accountable through RTI, added Minister Karunathilaka.
