Public authorities will receive a gazette notification next week advising them to be prepared to accept and act on RTI notifications by 4th February, says B.K.S. Ravindra, additional secretary to the Minister for Mass Media. The gazette lists the categories of public authorities that must implement the RTI Act. It is currently prepared and ready for distribution.
Further developments on RTI preparation and implementation are in motion. Mr. Ravindra confirmed that currently 700 Information Officers have been appointed, including in the cabinet office, President’s and Prime Minister’s offices, ministries and departments. Only two or three ministry Information Officer appointments are pending.
Mr. Ravindra also commented that trainings for Information Officers from all districts will be completed by February. This is on schedule with the timeline for preparation and implementation of RTI.
The next training will take place on the 6th of January in Uva in the Passara Training Centre. The participants will be the divisional secretaries from Moneragala and Badulla districts and all the heads of departments in the Uva council. On the 17th and 18th of January there will be another training of RTI trainers taking place at the Rajarata Hotel in Anuradhapura. The geographical target groups for this are Kilinochchi, Jaffna, Mannar, Vavuniya, Batticaloa, Mullaitivu, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura. From each district, two officers from each provincial council will become a trainer.
